Fall is my favorite season. There are many reasons autumn makes it to the top of the list. For starters, it’s the gateway to winter- and I love the cold, the snow and the serenity that comes from the silence in the streets - or if I happen to find myself in a field, the silence that comes from all manner of nature abandoning the cold in hibernation or flights south.
The four seasons give us four distinct color palettes- depending upon where you’re from, your genetics and your personal preference, you may like a particular season best because of the colors nature brings to the world. Usually, we love the colors that we look best in- so we wear those colors and choose furniture, paint and art in the tones we look good in. Take a look around your house- you’ll see what I mean.
Autumn is about jewel tones- I do love peacock blue, ruby red and emerald green. When I think of winter, it’s diamond white, the grays of the sky and the powder blue finish to the clouds. Spring is the season for delicate colors, and summer, bold and primary, as the sun moves closer to the earth.
Whatever you love on the color wheel- own it. If you love color and live in a beige house with beige rooms, you are missing out on one of creativity’s great gifts- the ability to live in the world in a way that inspires us.
Here are some beautiful rooms- and if you see yourself in them, make them happen. A little paint, some fabric, a low lamp with a pink bulb for warmth, a collection of photographs in black and white, with one color photo in the center- you see what’s possible. You see who you are.
