Mothers, Grandmothers and The Family Kitchen

A conversation with Lidia Matticchio Bastianich

Adriana Trigiani

Mar 27

Lidia is a mother, a grandmother, a daughter and one of America’s most important Italian chefs- and every heartbeat of her work is an homage to the women in her family. She learned everything she knows in her grandmother’s kitchen in Italy and her mother’s… first in Italy, and then side by side with her in America as she built an empire of pasta, farm to table herbs and vegetables and more…with A pot, a Pan and a Bowl. (the title of her most recent must-have cookbook!)

Lidia is funny- a true New Yorker. She still maintains a garden, cooks every day and dotes on her grandchildren as her mother doted on her children. She adored her mother and grandmother, and it comes through when she speaks about them. They taught her more than the art of dining and cuisine, of cooking and baking, they taught her about life.

Lidia is a television star- a working, hands-on restauranteur, and with her partnership in Eataly, an entrepreneur. She is wide open, emotional and strong- interested in the world around her, and as ambitious today as she was at the start. When we speak of Lidia, and when we read her books and eat in her establishments, we are aware of the excellence- of the drive behind the vision- of her confidence and talent- and the ways in which she ran her business and her life. We are curious how she did it- how she maintains it- and how she dreams bigger and better in the future. She is someone to emulate- and no one can articulate how to build the self esteem required to take a risk. She takes risks every day- great and small- with every tomato, garlic clove and splash of olive oil. She makes food an art form.

Adriana: Can you tell us how to build self-confidence?

Lidia: You have to believe in yourself, but you have to also invest in yourself. You have to take care of yourself, of your mind. You have to learn. Whatever your passion is, you have to make sure that you enrich yourself. Then, once you have that security, you have to go out there, work hard, and make it happen.

Adriana: I am putting this on my refrigerator door and bathroom mirror. I want your wisdom with me at all times!

A few thoughts about my mother, Ida Bonicelli Trigiani

I am traveling on a book tour, and this year, more than any previous tours, women are coming up to me and sharing the news of the passing of their mothers. Last night, Terri from the Women’s Fund in Knoxville, Tennessee told the story of her mother’s passing the week before. The conversation led us down all sorts of spiritual roads, but we f...
