Bruce: Here are my three hardest questions about love for Adriana Trigiani.
First question, is war good for love or bad for love?
Adriana: Bad. Because anything good that comes from war is an accident on the way to peace. War destroys people and families. We just have to turn on the TV right now to see how one person inflicted so much pain on one small nation. There are great love stories that come out of war. But it's because people are desperate to cling to whatever life means to them and love means life.
Bruce: And that’s the other half of the question, because it's wartime, there are all of these outbreaks involving love, is that because our emotions are heightened in some way?
Adriana: I think when you’re saying goodbye to your soldier, or you yourself are going to the service, or you have a fatalistic sense about it, I think now on the planet we feel it, we don’t know how long the planet will be here. There’s two things in this life, creativity or destruction, there’s no middle in that. You’re either building something up or destroying it.
Bruce: So, let's turn to the next hard question about love, should we keep secrets from our lovers or should we share them.
Adriana: Keep secrets. I think full disclosure is good for no one, including the person doing the disclosing. I think one of the interesting things about being a creative person is that we have very fertile imaginations. We have to protect those imaginations because they are the soil from which these ideas spring and the minute I reveal a secret, the starch goes out of the topic for me. If we’re talking about romantic love, I don’t think that’s sexy. If we’re talking about familial love, I don’t think it does anybody any good. And I feel that way too about reversals of fortune, infidelities, and I think it's between you and your god and there’s no reason to destroy lives around you for nonsense. Is that what you meant by secrets?
Bruce: That is what I meant. When you read this book, that is a good thing to keep in mind. Because the secrets are responsible for a lot of plot twists, both positive and negative.
